What was life like in Stockholm around 1900? This exhibition introduces you to residents from just before democracy was introduced — a time of dramatic change and contrasts.

Around 1900, Stockholm transformed from a rural archipelago town into a vibrant capital. The population doubled, and shopping streets, entertainment areas, and grand bank buildings emerged. New technologies changed daily life. Popular movements grew, and businesses flourished. However, conflicts and tensions also arose.

“New Stockholm — Turn of the Century 1900” offers an exciting journey through time. Featuring rare objects, photos, art, drawings and archival materials from the City Museum’s collections, you'll learn about the Stockholmers who shaped the city. Meet street children, campaigners for public morality, photographers, writers, businesswomen, acrobats, variety performers and a reluctant king. Welcome to an exhibition that brings these stories to life.

New additions to the exhibition

In February 2026, the exhibition was expanded with sketches by the artist Erik Tryggelin. Here, you can experience textiles, lace and leather captured in oil sketches. Can’t you almost hear the rustle of the skirts and the sound of heels against the cobblestones?
